What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy uses aromatic plant oils, essential oils, for improving psychological or physical well-being. It can be offered as a complementary therapy or as an alternative medicine.
Aromatherapy massage is massage using essential oils added to the massage oil or lotion.
What is an Essential Oil?
An Essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing aroma compounds from plants and is simply, essential, in the sense that it contains the essence of the plant fragrance. Pure essentials oils are known as the ‘life force of the plant’. Essential oils are approximately 70x more concentrated than the plant or herb they come from.
Essential oils are extracted from leaves, roots, resin, flowers, bark & fruit i.e. root of ginger…flowers of lavender…leaves of rosemary. Whether inhaled or absorbed through the skin, essential oils can promote changes in both the mind and body.
They can affect us emotionally & mentally with their powerful aromas.
The quality of essential oils is upmost. It is important to make sure the oils you purchase are from a reputable retailer & supplier and are pure, natural, authentic oils & not an ‘essence’ or ‘fragrance’.
Prices of essential oils can vary – this depends on availability, harvest & yield & how it is processed.
Oils can be mixed together to form a ‘synergy’ – “the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts”, and are classed in 3 evaporation rates which help to create a balanced & harmonious blend
At Head 2 Toe Massage Therapy North Canterbury…we add the essential oils to a base carrier oil which helps them penetrate into the skin. We like to use 100% pure unrefined cold pressed vegetable, nut or seed oils, which add their own beneficial nutrients and are readily absorbed & nourish the skin…an added bonus!
A word of caution – never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin unless specified. The only exceptions are Lavender & Tea Tree (commonly used for burns, insect bites or stings). They should never be taken orally.
At Head 2 Toe Massage Therapy we have a selection of aromatherapy blends to add to your massage oil. Which one you choose will depend on the added therapeutic benefits you wish to achieve from your massage. In our reception we use essential oil blends in a vaporiser to create a particular mood, health benefit i.e. to ward off the seasonal nasties, or just to create a beautiful ambience!

Remember if you have any questions or would like to enquire about which massage is most suitable for you, give myself or Hannah & Fili a call at Head2Toe Massage on Blackett Street in Rangiora. We are open Monday to Saturday with late nights on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and do a range of treatments from sports massage to pregnancy massage.
Many people ask, ‘Why is a sports massage of benefit? So I thought I’d write a quick blog explaining some of the benefits of a sports massage both pre an event and post an event or as part of your monthly training programme.
Sports massage helps to alleviate muscular tension & inflammation associated with exercise & the overuse of specific muscles used in a sporting activity. Whether you’re an elite competitive athlete or a recreational athlete, a regular massage is a great tool to factor into your training schedule as strains, tears & imbalances can be prevented or greatly reduced. Tense muscles can restrict joint movement and so we become more inflexible, our movements are restricted & therefore we are more prone to injury.
Whilst training for an event or as part of your lifestyle choice, sports massage can help heal problem injuries – alleviate chronic problem areas & deal with any old injuries & scar tissue. Regular sports massages will also aid in quicker recovery after workouts or injuries. A sports massage helps to do all of the above by increasing blood circulation, realigning muscle fibres and relaxing lingering sore/tense areas.
A sports massage can leave some people feeling like they have just had a workout but this all depends on your personal body & fitness. Like exercise the more regular your massages…the more the cumulative benefits. Because of these benefits massage is good as preventative maintenance.
Sports Massage can be used before an event to stimulate circulation, loosening & warming up the group of muscles that are to be used & to prepare the body for optimum performance. Sports Massage is not to be used instead of a warm-up! A massage can also enhance your psychological state – reducing stress & anxiety & encouraging focus. When scheduling a pre-event massage, that is not on the day of activity, please ensure you do so 3-4 days ahead to lessen any cumulative effects.
A Sports Massage after an event, post event, tends to be lighter and more calming & relaxing, helping to reduce muscular tension & promote muscle relaxation leading to a quicker recovery time. A post event sports massage can also reduce inflammation by flushing out metabolic-by-products that build up during high intensity sport.
In my opinion if an opportunity arises where massage is offered after you have finished your sporting event, take advantage of them if you can as these can be very beneficial to how you feel the next day!

As Autumn starts to arrive we felt it would be a nice time to run a facebook competition for our fans, especially our pregnant ones. We will be giving one lucky lady a 1 hour pregnancy massage to help ease any aches or pains or simply to relax and unwind. To enter the competition all you need to do is like our facebook page at Head2Toe in Rangiora, North Canterbury and share the post. Remember you must do both. You don’t have to be pregnant to enter, you could know someone pregnant that would love the treat, so enter with her in mind.

Here at Head2Toe Massage in Rangiora all 3 of our therapists are qualified in pregnancy massage and can adapt your massage to ensuring your comfort. What should I expect during my first massage visit?
You will be required to fill out a health history form. It is important to list all health concerns & medication so that your therapist can adapt the session to your specific needs. Your therapist will ask you general questions to establish what your concerns are & what condition you present with. Please note any allergies as this can make a difference to what oil your therapist will use.
Do I have to get undressed?
You should undress to the level you are comfortable. We generally ask clients to leave their underwear on during the session. It is important that you relax & feel comfortable so that you get the optimal benefit from your session. Your therapist will give you privacy to undress & get comfortable on the table.
Am I covered on the table?
You are always draped on the table, the therapist will only uncover the part of your body being worked on. The genitals or breasts will not be uncovered.
What do I do during a massage treatment?
Make yourself comfortable on the table. Your therapist will move you or ask you to move if needed. It’s your massage… so close your eyes & relax during the session or you may prefer to talk. If your massage is treatment based your therapist may need your feedback on pain levels so may talk to you to prevent you drifting off. Feel free to ask questions during the session.
How long is a massage session?
For a full body massage we would recommend 60-90mins to ensure optimal relaxation. For neck & shoulders, back, legs & feet you may find 30-45mins sufficient.
Does massage hurt?
This will depend on the type of massage & how deep the therapist works. A light, relaxing massage shouldn’t hurt. There will be times when you may experience a “feel good” hurt during a deep tissue massage. An ‘ouch, stop it’ hurt may cause you to tense your muscles, negating the effects of the massage. It may take your body several sessions to get use to the pressure required for an effective result. We will always work to your comfort.
How often should I get a massage?
This will vary from person to person. For optimum benefits we would recommend regular sessions every 4-6wks. If we need to ensure a muscular/postural change stays we may suggest you come more frequently at first. It is important to not expect years of tension & pain to be dealt with in one 60min session…sometimes we can eliminate/decrease pain in that time…sometimes it takes a few sessions to get to the underlying problem.
How will I feel after my massage session?
How you feel will vary depending on the style of massage used. You may feel relaxed, sleepy, renewed or invigorated. If you have received a deep tissue massage, you may be slightly sore the next day – similar to a workout at the gym. The benefits of massage tend to be cumulative, so you will feel better as you get additional massages. A spa or hot shower can be of benefit. We encourage you to drink an extra glass or two of water over your normal intake. A light walk can also be beneficial. We discourage you from doing any heavy workouts after a treatment massage.
Is there any time I shouldn’t get a massage?
You should not book a massage if you have a fever, cold/flu or contagious skin infection… not enjoyable for you or your therapist! We can adapt our techniques for conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis, diabetes. We can avoid areas completely – burns, varicose veins. You will need to discuss with your therapist re cancer & heart conditions. Generally we can adapt a massage session to cater for your specific needs.
